Justin Medeiros is an American professional CrossFit Athlete, two time podium finisher, and the reigning Fittest Man on Earth. At the 2021 CrossFit Games Justin became the youngest CrossFit Games Champion in the history of the sport on the men’s side.
Justin sat down with Matteo Franceschetti, co-founder and CEO of Eight Sleep, to talk training, recovery, and how he stays focused on his game.
What’s a day in the life of Justin Medeiros like? Do you have a bedtime or morning routine?
Consistency is key for my daily routine. I wake up and go to bed at the same time everyday and make sure I have enough wind-down time before bed each night.
How has your relationship with sleep changed over the years?
In the past, sleep was not a priority as I wanted more hours in the day. When I got serious about my training, I realized good sleep helps me make the most out of my hours during the day. If I’m tired during a training session, I can’t give my 100%. Prioritizing sleep now has made a dramatic difference in my energy levels and recovery.
You know as well as anyone the impact recovery has on performance. How do you optimize your recovery?
Everyone on this level works hard, so I have to use every bit of time I can to give me an edge. Sleeping isn't just about spending time in bed with my eyes closed, it is about optimizing recovery and putting me in the position to continue to improve.
Not only are you competing in the world’s top events, but you’re also a student. How do you balance class work on top of training?
Whether in school or in the gym, I am constantly learning how to overcome obstacles and best optimize my time. Being in school while training as a professional athlete has taught me how to become more intentional with my time. I apply the same skills in all areas of my life.
You were recently crowned Fittest Man on Earth. How did the Pod Pro help you prepare for the CrossFit games?
Before the games, I moved in with my coach, Adam, and was sleeping extremely hot and knew I needed to fix it. I was able to get the Pod Pro and it changed my sleep and recovery completely, as I was finally able to sleep at a comfortable and consistent temperature.
What is a dream you have yet to accomplish?
When I’m done competing I want to open a gym and contribute to the community that has given me so much already.
Having Eight Sleep as a part of my training arsenal was a huge component in winning the CrossFit Games this year. The amount of time that I spent inside the gym is equal to the time I spent outside the gym making my recovery even more important.
