Behind the Design: A Look Into Our Re-designed Pod 4 Hub

In building Pod 4, we made several innovations directly to the heart of the Pod – the Hub. From a quieter design and faster cooling process to swapping the color and fabric of the Hub for a sleeker aesthetic, Pod 4’s Hub has undergone major upgrades to provide an even better sleeping environment for members.

What is the Hub?

The Hub is the central system of the Pod that holds water for cooling and heating. To adjust the Cover’s temperature, it uses a thermal engine and cooling fans to cool and heat water as needed before dispersing it through the Cover’s tubing. It also hosts the connectivity and processing chips. 

We updated these three key components of the Hub when redesigning it for Pod 4. 

  • Water reservoir: The cylindrical piece of the Hub where the Pod’s water source is stored. 
  • Tubing and pump system: The system that pumps water from the reservoir and through the Hub’s tubing, filling the Cover with water.
  • Thermal engine and cooling fans: The components that allow the Hub to heat and cool water running through the Pod’s tubing. 

A virtually silent powerhouse

The first challenge of the Hub’s redesign was to increase the thermoregulating power of the Hub while decreasing the noise level of the thermal engine and cooling fans. To achieve this, we redesigned the thermal engine with more conductive materials and larger heat sinks, allowing it to eliminate heat waste more efficiently. This update puts less pressure on the cooling fans, reducing the noise emitted from the Hub while packing unmatched power into one compact unit.

Pod 4’s Hub has a larger priming reservoir which helps offer more acoustic and vibrational damping for the Hub’s pumps. Additionally, we’ve relocated the tubing system to run along the bottom of the Hub to emit less sound. Outside the tubing and pump system, we optimized details of the cooling fan design, like the spacing between fans and rotational precision to improve their overall sound profile to be more pleasant. Plus, all-new electronic components of the device have led to a significant reduction of high-frequency noise. 

All these updates resulted in an impressive 40% decrease in sound pressure from Pod 3 to Pod 4, bringing it down to just 30 decibels on the -2 cooling setting. Although it was never truly loud to begin with, this decrease in noise emitted from the device will create a near-silent user experience environment, eliminating another factor in the way of your best sleep.

Equipped with a faster, more efficient cooling system

Hot sleepers know how important it is to reach their ideal sleep temperature quickly — especially if they’re already warm when getting into bed or experiencing night sweats. That’s why we updated the thermal engine to reach cool temperatures more quickly to provide members with faster relief from uncomfortable temperatures. Rigorous testing uncovered that Pod 4 cools 2x faster than Pod 3 when set to max cooling temperature. The new Hub can even efficiently maintain its coldest temperatures in extreme heat.

Plus a seamless installation experience

In redesigning the Pod’s reservoir and tubing system, we were also able to improve the Pod’s setup experience, reducing installation time by 90%. Previously the longest step in the installation process was what we called priming – the process through which the water goes from the Hub to the Cover and air is removed from the system. Pod 4 can now fill with water in less than 10 minutes while previous generations took over 1.5 hours. After setting up, the Pod will detect exactly how much water is left in the Hub tank (and when it’s time to refill), so you’ll never have to go a single night without the Pod’s next-level temperature adjustments to meet you and your bedmate’s needs.
