What is the Right Sleep Temperature?

There are plenty of factors that play into getting a good night’s rest. One of the biggest factors is sleep temperature. But what exactly is the right temperature to sleep at?

It’s important to remember that room temperature isn’t the only temperature that can affect sleep. In order to fall asleep quickly and sleep soundly, your body temperature and bed temperature have to be regulated as well. Room, body, and bed temperature combined make up sleep temperature. However, there’s no one right sleep temperature for everyone.

When it comes to the proper room temperature for sleep, somewhere between 60-68 degrees generally works. To find your perfect temperature, adjust the thermostat or fan setting in your room until you find the temperature you sleep best at. It may help to use a sleep tracker to measure the improvement that a change in temperature brings to your sleep.

Body temperature is another factor to bear in mind. Before bed, our body temperature naturally lowers to help us fall asleep. However, habits like sleeping under a comforter in the summer and wearing unbreathable fabrics to bed can prevent this. Always opt for 100% cotton sheets and pajamas to avoid waking up shivering or covered in sweat.

Another reason that you may sleep cool or sleep hot is your mattress. Bed temperature can prevent a good night’s rest if the bed is too hot or cold. For example, certain memory foam mattresses tend to trap air, making you sleep hot. If this is the case for you, consider switching to a cooling mattress such as the Pod, which offers dynamic cooling as low as 55 degrees Fahrenheit and as high as 110. You may not need the extremes, however it guarantees to keep you comfortable all night long.

The right sleep temperature includes room, body and bed temperature. There is no one specific temperature that works for everyone, but following the above tips can help you find the temperature that results in your best sleep yet.
